Lynn Porch dies of cancer at 57; was wife of Tenn. Baptist exec

TULLAHOMA, Tenn. (BP)–Lynn Porch, wife of Tennessee Baptist Convention Executive Director James Porch, died Oct. 19 at her home in Tullahoma, Tenn., following an extended battle with cancer.
Porch, 57, was the daughter of James L. Sullivan, retired president of the Baptist Sunday School Board (now LifeWay Christian Resources) of the Southern Baptist Convention and the late Velma Sullivan.
She was a retired mathematics teacher and guidance counselor at Tullahoma High School, where she is remembered by many of her students for her ability to listen, counsel and offer guidance in a wide range of concerns. While at the school she served in various roles, including chairman of the math department and faculty sponsor for the New Alpha Feta honorary math society.
She also was active at First Baptist Church, Tullahoma, where her husband served as pastor prior to becoming TBC executive director nearly six years ago. She was a member of the choir, organized and taught the first couple’s class, and participated in church-sponsored mission trips to Michigan and Venezuela.
A native of Clinton, Miss., Porch was an honors graduate of Mississippi College in Clinton, where she received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. She did additional study at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro.
In addition to her husband and father, survivors include two children, Scott and Terri; a grandchild; a sister, Beth Taylor; and a brother, David Sullivan.
Visitation will be Oct. 20 in the chapel of the Tennessee Baptist Center, Brentwood, at 6:30 p.m., and Oct. 21 at First Baptist Church, Tullahoma, at 6:30 p.m. The body will lie in state Oct. 22 at the church beginning at 10 a.m., followed by a memorial celebration at 11. Internment will be at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens, Tullahoma.
