Midwestern taps Cogdill as academic affairs v.p.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (BP)–Jim Cogdill Jr. has been appointed vice president for academic affairs at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Kansas City, Mo., and will assume his duties July 1.
Cogdill currently is pastor of Wake Cross Roads Baptist Church, Raleigh, N.C., and has been an adjunct professor of evangelism and church growth at nearby Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary since 1989.
Cogdill received the unanimous support of the Midwestern Seminary faculty in a May 13 meeting. He will be recommended as a visiting professor of evangelism at an upcoming meeting of the seminary trustees’ instruction committee. His election as a full professor will be considered at a regular meeting of the trustee board next fall, in keeping with bylaw requirements.
Midwestern President Mark Coppenger praised Cogdill’s qualifications, stating, “By putting an evangelism Ph.D. at the heart of our academic program, we show our seriousness about educating God’s servants ‘to evangelize and congregationalize the Midwest/Great Plains region,'” Coppenger said, quoting the seminary’s mission statement.
A native of Illinois, Cogdill was ordained by First Baptist Church, Vienna, Ill., in 1976. He received both the bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees from Southeast Missouri State University and pursued graduate studies at the University of Louisville (Ky.).
He earned master of divinity and doctor of philosophy degrees from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Ky., in 1986 and 1990, respectively.
While at Southeastern, Cogdill has coordinated seminary off-campus extension centers, in addition to teaching in the areas of church ministries, pastoral leadership, church growth and evangelism.
Southeastern President Paige Patterson said, “Jim Cogdill brings to this position all the features you want in a dean — intellectual prowess, demonstrated and prestigious degrees from Southern Seminary, pastoral experience in one of the great, growing churches of North Carolina and a passionate heart for evangelism and worldwide missionary endeavor.”
