Missionary John Martz dies after battle with cancer

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP)–John Martz, a Southern Baptist missionary to southern Africa for 17 years, died Sept. 22, 2003, after a battle with cancer. He was 59.

A native of Birmingham, Ala., Martz and his wife, the former Sarah Mays of Birmingham, were appointed by the International Mission Board in 1986. He served as a general evangelist in Namibia and, since February 2000, South Africa.

Martz was a graduate of Samford University in Birmingham and Southern
Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. Prior to missionary service, he was pastor of Liberty Baptist Church in Morris, Ala., New Liberty (Ky.)
Baptist Church and Bethel Baptist Church in Townsend, Tenn.

He is survived by his wife; one son, John Martz Jr. of Pleasant Grove, Ala.; and one daughter, Mary Beth Martz of Pleasant Grove.
