MOVIES: Is Genesis scientific history?

[1]

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (BP) – “In the beginning,” Genesis 1:1.

Based on the account in Genesis, some believe God created everything in six days. Others believe the universe came about during billions of years of conception. Many busy with life don’t take the time to consider either scenario.

No matter what people believe, something obviously happened. And some scholars say the first book of the Bible does contain solid, historical answers to what in fact happened in the beginning.

The upcoming investigative documentary “Is Genesis History?” from Compass Cinema offers an evidence-based argument for the historical and scientific reliability of Genesis. Several doctors of philosophy in the fields of geology, biology, astronomy and archeology are interviewed throughout the film, signifying that there are learned men and women of science who consider God’s Word not just a spiritual guidepost, but true historical fact.

This investigative documentary is hosted by Ted Tackett, who served more than 20 years in the U.S. Air Force and was appointed director of technical planning for the National Security Council by President George H.W. Bush. Tackett holds a doctor of management degree from Colorado Technical University, a master of science from Auburn University and a bachelor of science from Kansas State University. His many published works include writings on issues related to culture and worldviews. It is his duty in the film to prompt or introduce several colleagues, all of whom possess equally impressive curriculum vitae.

One simple statement stands out in the production and ignites a powerful conversation concerning the hows and whys of our existence: “Time is not a magic wand that explains all geological questions.” The statement is a potent rebuff of the academic elite who remain devoted to the flawed theory of the big bang.

“For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight” (1 Corinthians 3:19 NIV).

The evolutionist doesn’t believe the story of creation. Maybe he doesn’t want to believe it. Does he deny spirituality or define it in an abstract manner to avoid contemplating a God to whom everyone must answer? Whatever his reason, he simply cannot accept the creationist’s hypothesis.

“‘Come now, and let us reason together,’ saith the Lord” (Isaiah 1:18 KJV).

Even sadder are those who focus on the here and now, avoiding contemplation of the past or eternal future. They take no time to consider what caused some atoms to become mountains, while others took the form of oceans. They are appeased by a dictated classroom theory that stresses the making of man was accidental.

The big bang and evolution are the central teachings found in academia’s secularized science classes, despite the fact that ultimately it takes as much faith (maybe more) to believe creation happened by mishap as by a Designer. Unfairly, only one view is allowed a voice in today’s public school classroom. There is a need for Christian scientists and filmmakers to boldly go where no secularist will.

Following in the steps of films such as “The Genesis Code,” “The Case for Faith,” and “Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed,” the upcoming documentary proposes thoughtful answers to complex questions:

— Was the universe created in six literal days?
— Did humans evolve?
— Were Adam and Eve real?
— Was there a global flood?
— What happened to the dinosaurs?

We Christians have our scientists; the non-believers have theirs. Whose opinion will you trust? Which paradigm do you want to embrace? I suggest you see the film. It will leave believers emboldened and may cause skeptics to reexamine theorems. This well-made documentary gave me one more confirmation that faith is not blind.

“Is Genesis History?” will be shown one night only, Feb. 23, in more than 600 theaters nationwide. Following the film, there will be a moderated on-screen discussion with Tackett and a panel of scientists and theologians regarding Genesis’ impact on Christians today. A DVD release date had not been announced. More information about the production is available at IsGenesisHistory.com.
