MUSIC BUZZ: Velaszquez joins Latin cast for tribute to 9-11 victims

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)–Jaci Velasquez has joined an all-star cast in recording a tribute song for the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York, Washington and western Pennsylvania.

Velasquez, along with Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony and Gloria Estefan, recorded “El Ultimo Adios.”

“El Ultimo Adios” was written and produced by Emilio Estefan, Gian Marco and Jon Secada. All proceeds will go to the American Red Cross and United Way.

In other Christian music news:

— Mary Mary was recently presented with the Soul Train, Lady of Soul Award for Best Gospel Album. During the ceremony, the sisters performed “Little Girl” from their upcoming 2002 release. Shirley Caesar also attended the event, presenting an award with Sunshine Anderson and Eric Benet.

— Amy Grant’s song, “Somewhere Down the Road” from her “Behind the Eyes” album, was recently heard on “Good Morning America.” The ABC morning show used the song as a music bed under video footage of the Sept. 11 tragedies.

— Pete Orta launched his new album “Born Again” by headlining the Fair Grounds in his hometown of Lubbock, Texas, Sept. 18.

— Ben Glover hosted the annual Belmont University Gospel Showcase Sept. 29 in Nashville, the day after he performed at the Baptist Press Student Journalism Conference. Glover introduced four new industry-selected Belmont artists to a full auditorium of cheering college students.

— Mark Schultz’s new “I Have Been There” music video along with Nicole C. Mullen’s “Call On Jesus” video were two of the featured video presentations of the evening.

— The Point of Grace ladies recently hit the Memphis, Tenn. market as part of their six-week nation-wide Free To Fly Tour along with special guest FFH.

— Nashville-based Reunion Records is launching a major marketing campaign in support of NewSong’s “The Christmas Shoes” Christmas album. The 12-song project inspired by last year’s runaway hit single, “The Christmas Shoes,” will debut Oct. 23.

“The Christmas Shoes” single released to both Christian and secular radio stations last November and immediately climbed the radio charts, reaching No. 1 in only three weeks, and in so doing, tied the all-time Billboard record set by label-mate Bob Carlisle’s, “Butterfly Kisses.” St. Martin’s Press also will publish a novel based on the hit song.
