CARSON CITY, Nev. (BP)–A record $2.17 million budget was adopted by messengers to the 19th annual meeting of the Nevada Baptist Convention.
The 1998 budget represents an increase of 5.1 percent over the 1997 budget, most of which is attributed to increased giving through the Cooperative Program. CP giving for 1998 is anticipated to reach $825,000 from the state’s 170 churches and missions, up from the $739,000 budgeted for 1997.
Messengers also voted to increase the percentage of giving to world missions through the Cooperative Program by .25 percent, totaling 26.75 percent for 1998. Messengers have consistently increased percentage giving to world missions in the convention’s brief history.
The encouraging and trouble-free meeting, registering 119 messengers, was held at First Baptist Church, Carson City, Oct. 21-22.
Re-elected as president of the convention, which encompasses more than 30,000 Baptists in Nevada, was Joe Taylor, pastor of South Reno Baptist Church.
Steve Colquitt, pastor of Walker River Baptist Church, Schurz, was elected first vice president and Steve Turrentine, pastor of Redrock Baptist Church, Las Vegas, second vice president. All three officers were unopposed in their election.
Messengers voted to change the convention’s constitution regarding membership of churches, to now require churches desiring to affiliate with the convention to submit a petitionary letter to the Committee on Credentials no less than 60 days prior to the annual meeting. Previously, there were no requirements for petitioning for membership prior to the first session of the annual meeting.
The featured speaker for the meeting was Johnny Hunt, pastor of First Baptist Church, Woodstock, Ga., who preached twice to the messengers. The annual sermon was delivered by Dennis Kim, pastor of First Korean Baptist Church, Las Vegas.
The 20th annual meeting of the convention will be held next year at Redrock Baptist Church, Las Vegas, Oct. 20-21.
