New book prepares students for missions adventures

RICHMOND, Va. (BP)–“That first mission trip can be a very scary thing,” said Alvin Jeffery, student at Union University in Jackson, Tenn. “I had never been out of the country before, and for the first time in my life, I was ripped out of my comfort zone. And it was great!”

Jeffery is one of 90 students whose stories are in the newly released book, “My Life, His Mission” by Kim P. Davis, written in partnership with the International Mission Board and Integrity Publishers. Intended for high school and college students as a six-week spiritual preparation for international missions, it is the second book in the “Voices of the Faithful” family. “Voices of the Faithful” by Beth Moore and Southern Baptist missionaries, with Davis as the compiling editor, was released in August 2005 and has sold more than 280,000 copies.

“Students need to see that as followers of Christ they can have an important role to play in missions, whether it is praying or going overseas,” said Davis, a former IMB missionary in Africa. “This book will help a student determine his or her role in the Great Commission.”

Each lesson in the book incorporates biblical principles and reveals how God uses ordinary people to carry His message to the lost. Using real-life stories of student missionaries, My Life, His Mission explores topics such as praying effectively for world missions, hearing God’s call, trusting God, being flexible, sharing the Gospel and taking risks.

“As a missionary for 13 years who hosted a lot of volunteers on the field, I realized the importance of helping students be prepared before coming to the field,” said Davis, adding that preparation begins with developing one’s walk with the Lord.

“This book is a practical guide to experience other cultures and serve God in missions,” said Tim Elmore, president of Growing Leaders. Others endorsing the book include Richard Ross, international spokesperson for True Love Waits and professor of student ministries at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and Rick Heil, lead singer of SONICFLOOd and partner with the IMB in the upcoming “This Generation” tour.

A free leader’s guide integrates lesson plans, discussion questions and DVD footage of students serving on the international mission field. The guide can be downloaded or ordered as part of a free DVD.
