New Calif. communications division includes Terry Barone as paper’s editor

FRESNO, Calif. (BP)–The California Southern Baptist Convention’s executive board voted Jan. 23 to combine its communication and state paper ministries into a communications division. They also elected a director to head the division and an assistant editor for the California Southern Baptist, the state Baptist newspaper.

Terry Barone, director of the CSBC office of communications since October 1991, was elected director of the new division. As director, Barone also will serve as editor of the CSB.

Holly Smith, veteran CSB news assistant, was elected assistant editor of the monthly newsjournal. Their election was effective immediately.

In addressing the creation of the communications division, Mike McCullough, CSBC associate executive director, said, “This would create a good team. We can have a great newspaper and do a better job in our communication side as well.”

In creating the new division, the board also approved a position for a communications writer/photographer.

McCullough said the writer will work primarily for the CSB but also will serve other communication needs of the executive board staff.

“We feel this writing position will benefit the convention best at this time by providing much-needed writing and photography. We are excited about the possibilities of what this can do for us,” McCullough said.

The reorganization of the ministry departments into the division will not require additional Cooperative Program resources, but “will be a net savings,” said board chairman Steve Davidson.

Prior to his service with CSBC, Barone served the Baptist General Convention of Texas as an information consultant for nearly 12 years, primarily writing news and feature articles for Baptist and secular media. His duties at the BGCT also included editing a monthly promotional magazine with a circulation of almost 10,000.

He also served as public information officer for Hillcrest Baptist Hospital in Waco, Texas, and was a reporter and news editor for the Waco Tribune-Herald, a daily newspaper with circulation of 45,000. A graduate of Baylor University, Barone also was a writer for the university while a student.

In addition to his undergraduate degree, he holds a master of journalism degree from the University of North Texas.

Barone is a member of the Baptist Communicators Association and Religion Communicators Council. He has served as BCA president and in several other positions and has served on RCC’s governing board.

Barone and his wife, Linda, have a daughter who is a high school senior. They are members of Trinity Southern Baptist Church in Fresno.

Smith has been an integral part of the CSB for nearly 12 years. While employed at the convention, she also has served as secretary in the office of public relations and as a data processor in the word processing department.

A California native, Smith attended Baylor and California State University, Fresno. She also is a BCA member.

Smith is a member of LifeWay Baptist Church in Fresno where she serves as assistant worship leader.
