New IMB leaders to serve churches, associations, state conventions

RICHMOND, Va. (BP)–Three new leaders are helping the International Mission Board’s Office of Mobilization sharpen its products and services to better meet the needs of Southern Baptists.

Earlier this year, the board reorganized its Public Relations and Development office, naming it the Office of Mobilization to focus on the challenge of mobilizing Southern Baptists for involvement in God’s global mission, said Larry Cox, vice president of the office.

“As part of the reorganization, we are creating teams to help us better understand our partners’ needs so our products and services will meet them better,” Cox said. “Jerry Daniel and Terry Sharp will lead two of these strategic teams.”

Jerry Daniel will direct the Church Services Team, which will help congregations find ways to increase missions awareness and involvement. He also will help churches partner with missionaries and other churches to reach the lost around the world.

Since 1999, Daniel has served as an instructor, consultant and, most recently, as vice president of Global Focus, an organization that trains pastors and church leaders to personalize their congregations’ global missions involvement.

Prior to that, the Marietta, Ga., native served more than 20 years on the staff of Atlanta-area churches as an associate pastor and as a consultant in strategic planning and church growth.

Terry Sharp, director of the State and Associational Relations Department, will work with leaders of state conventions and local associations to develop strategies and products to mobilize Southern Baptists for missions. He also will work to improve communication between states and the IMB, as well as establishing partnerships between the IMB and other Great Commission Christians.

Sharp is a native of Lafollette, Tenn. For seven years, he worked with the Tennessee Baptist Convention as leader of the partnership and volunteer missions team establishing and maintaining ministry partnerships with associations and churches in the United States and abroad. He also served the Tennessee convention as associate director of the Missions Department beginning in 1991.

“Each of these men bring years of experience in working with churches and denominational entities,” Cox said. “We are excited they have joined our office to facilitate missions mobilization movements among Southern Baptists.”

A third new leader, Kathy Chapman Sharp, will direct the IMB’s Publishing Department. She will guide the development of print and print-related products and services designed to lead Southern Baptists to become personally involved in reaching the world for Christ.

Sharp comes to the IMB from LifeWay Christian Resources in Nashville. At LifeWay, she served in editorial and administrative roles with HomeLife and other discipleship family magazines. She also coordinated a LifeWay team developed to identify the special needs of churches and pastors.

Before joining the LifeWay staff, Sharp served as minister of education with two churches in the Nashville area. A native of Louisville, Ky. she is a free-lance author and is active in HeartFelt Ministries, a ministry to women that conducts international conferences and retreats on prayer and volunteer missions.

Kathy and Terry Sharp’s prior involvement with the IMB includes two years as missionaries to Spain and five years as missionaries to Brazil.

“In addition to Kathy’s experience as a missionary, her background in writing and publishing will enable our Publishing Department to continue to fill our toolbox with excellent products that mobilize Southern Baptists for international missions,” Cox said.
