New missions bulletin hits 500,000 copies in 8 weeks

RICHMOND, Va. (BP)–A new publication designed to tell Southern Baptists how God is at work around the world jumped to 500,000 copies in its first two months on the market.
The International Mission Board’s new “mobilization fliers” are a bulletin-insert-sized news sheet loaded with concise reports from the cutting edge of world missions, said Louis Moore, the agency’s associate vice president for communications.
The fliers are delivered free of charge to congregations each month.
“People want to know what God is doing all over the world, but sometimes it’s hard to decipher it with the maze and mix of messages in all the different media that are out there,” Moore said. “This is like a miniature newspaper for people who want information that cuts right to the point.
“These fliers are a quick read, snappy and colorful and attractive. They are chock-full of information and ideas in a format that can be used in Sunday school classes, prayer meetings or Woman’s Missionary Union circles, as well as bulletin inserts.”
A sample of the first issue was sent to pastors along with the September issue of the IMB’s monthly magazine, “The Commission,” Moore said. The pastors were told the fliers were available free of charge in whatever quantities a church could distribute.
“We thought we’d be lucky to send out 50,000 the first month, but we received requests for 300,000,” he said. “Two weeks after the second issue went out, we were closing in on 400,000. This past week, we topped the 500,000 mark.”
The primary value of the fliers is to help people catch a vision for God’s work in the world without overloading them with information, said IMB President Jerry Rankin.
“We’re delighted with the initial response to this valuable resource,” he said. “Already more than 3,000 churches have ordered more than half a million mobilization fliers.
“As this is distributed each month, church members will catch the vision of how God is at work around the world and how they and their church can be more involved in being on mission with God.”
