New non-‘Southern’ name proposed for religious educators’ group

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)–A proposal to rename the Southern Baptist Religious Education Association will be considered when the organization holds its annual meeting March 30-April 1 in Nashville, Tenn.

The proposed new name for the organization is the Baptist Association of Christian Educators, according to a 10-member study committee’s recommendation.

The SBREA Journal, in its January-March edition, noted an interest among the organization’s members “to reach a broader spectrum of Christian educators.”

The committee’s recommendation drops the words, “Southern Baptist,” from the proposed new name but keeps the word, “Baptist,” to “preserve our common bond, purpose, and identity,” the SBREA Journal reported.

Other facets of the committee’s rationale for the new name include “Christian” replacing “Religious” “since most seminaries and many other organizations now use that term and since many younger educators can better identify with it,” the newsletter reported, and “educators” replacing “education” to place emphasis “on the people within the organization, rather than on a vocational area.”
