Pastors tee it up at LifeWay golf retreat

GLORIETA, N.M. (BP)–An inaugural “Pastor’s Masters Golf Retreat” drew 52 pastors, worship leaders, deacons and laymen to LifeWay Glorieta Conference Center in New Mexico for fellowship, Bible study and tournament-type golfing.

The men represented 40 churches from around the nation.

LifeWay Conference Centers of LifeWay Christian Resources collaborated with In His Grip Golf Association to host the Sept. 25-27 gathering.

Scott Lehman, the golfing association’s founder and president, joined the retreat participants on the green each day to offer tips to improve their game A professional golf instructor, Lehman is the coauthor of “The Master’s Grip: Lessons for Winning in Life and Golf.”

During the three-day event, Lehman led evening Bible study sessions and used golf-related themes to convey spiritual messages and applications.

Lehman shared his own spiritual journey of how God “got a grip” on his life and underscored his passion to “teach golfers how to take their game and life to a higher level.”

Jeff Smith, bivocational pastor of First Baptist Church in Havana, Ark., who also works a fulltime job at a factory, was among those who enjoyed the opportunity to unwind. A deacon at Smith’s church sensed his need to spend time alone with God. While on the LifeWay.com website, the deacon read about the upcoming golf retreat and tournament for pastors and registered Smith immediately.

“God preaches loud to me through His creation,” said Smith, a golf and nature lover. While he admitted life had become extremely busy for him, he knew attending the retreat would provide opportunity “to meet God.”
