Patterson inauguration at SWBTS slated Oct. 21

FORT WORTH, Texas (BP)–Paige Patterson will be inaugurated as the eighth president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary Oct. 21 at Travis Avenue Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas.

Seminary trustees and faculty invite the public to attend the ceremony, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the church, located at 3041 Travis Ave.

Patterson was elected president of Southwestern Seminary by a unanimous vote of the institution’s trustees June 24. He was president of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C., for 11 years and president of the Southern Baptist Convention from 1998-2000.

He becomes the second Southern Baptist statesman to serve as president of two SBC seminaries; Duke McCall earlier served at New Orleans and then at Southern.

Various SBC leaders will speak at Patterson’s inauguration, including New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary President Chuck Kelley; SBC President Jack Graham, pastor of the Dallas-area Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano; Richard Land, president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission; and Jerry Vines, pastor of First Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Fla., and a former SBC president.

The largest of the SBC’s six seminaries, Southwestern was founded in 1908.
