PHOTO ESSAY: Remembering the tsunami

[1]

KHAO LAK, Thailand (BP)–On Dec. 26, 2004, a massive earthquake in the Indian Ocean spawned one of the most destructive tsunamis in recorded history. It swept away more than 225,000 lives and left millions of people homeless. One year later, Southern Baptists continue to aid and share God’s love with survivors in South Asia.

On the one-year anniversary of the devastating tsunami, Southern Baptist workers gathered with other people along Thailand’s southern coast to remember those who tragically were lost.

An estimated 6,000 people gathered from across the globe at Khao Lak, one of the beaches that was devastated. Men, women and children from different lands and religions, touched by the tragedy —- many of whom had given their time and money in relief efforts that followed —- returned to this beach where so many died. Each was bound together by this tragedy and the response that followed.

The photographs here tell the story of the one-year anniversary gathering.
