Rabun Brantley dies at 96, was education agency exec

SYLVANIA, Ga. (BP)–Rabun Lee Brantley, a longtime Southern Baptist educator, died Nov. 22 in Sylvania, Ga. He was 96.

Brantley served as president of Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Va., from 1945-56. He became executive secretary of the former Southern Baptist Convention’s Education Commission in 1959, where he served until his retirement in 1971. The Education Commission was disbanded as part of the restructuring of the Southern Baptist Convention from 1995-97.

Brantley also served for nearly two years as acting financial officer for the American Baptist Theological Seminary in Nashville, Tenn., a National Baptist Convention school which the SBC provided assistance for until the restructuring.

Brantley is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Estes Brantley of Sylvania, and sons William R. Brantley of Greenville, S.C., and Richard E. Brantley of Gainesville, Fla.
