Recording artist Jason Morant to lead music at student journalism conference

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)–Jason Morant is still in his early twenties, but he’s been a music and worship leader for more than six years.

He began in his church youth group in New Orleans. Word got around the church, and before long, adults were coming over to the youth building after the main service to participate.

Morant’s pastor felt the need to capture what was going on in those services, so in 1998, with the support of his church, Morant recorded his first album entitled “Make Me New.”

It wasn’t long before Morant and his band were traveling to churches all over the South. It was during these years that Morant developed the ability to adjust to his audience to lead them into worship.

“When I’m leading worship, I want to set a table everyone can sit at,” Jason says on his web site, www.jasonmorant.com. “It can’t be about me and it can’t be about them. We have to be of one mind and one heart. If we get our focus right, musical style, age and church background stop mattering.”

Morant will be the music leader for the 2003 Baptist Press Student Journalism Conference Oct. 9-11.

“I’m excited about having Jason add his talents and ministry to our conference,” said Will Hall, vice president for news services with the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee and executive editor of Baptist Press. “We present a strong lineup of skill-building workshops and other professional development events, and want to be sure to have special times for spiritual encouragement and enrichment as well.

“Jason presents an authentic focus on the worship of God in his music, and I’m confident his ministry in song will bless us.”

Morant recently signed with Integrity Music and currently is recording his first album for the label. It was a long process to get to this point, but it was in God’s time, he says.
