Resort missionary chosen to participate in torch relay

TAHOE CITY, Calif. (BP)–Debbie Wohler, a North American Mission Board resort missionary in California, is one of the participants in the Torch Relay for the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Wohler has worked in Lake Tahoe since 1979, and has served in a variety of ministry capacities at six Olympic games. She is expected to participate in the torch relay on Jan. 20 or Jan. 21. She doesn’t know exactly where her leg of the relay will be, but she has been told it will be within 200 miles Tahoe City.

“When I was in fifth grade I was asked at school, “What do you want to be when you grow up?'” Wohler told the California Southern Baptist newspaper. “I answered, “An Olympic athlete or a missionary.’ Little did I dream what God had in mind.”

Wohler was nominated based on that dream by her roommate, Gaynelle Jackson, who directs the before-and-after-school program for First Baptist Church of Tahoe City. Friends across the country also submitted nominations through the Internet, according to Jackson.

Wohler said the torch relay will pass through 42 California cities on it’s way to Salt Lake City.
