Rob Bell book focus of seminary event

[1]

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP)–Two days after a controversial book by pastor Rob Bell is released, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary will host a discussion about the book. The March 17 event will be streamed online.

According to one early review, the book supports universalism and rejects the doctrine of hell. Bell, a popular pastor in Grand Rapids, Mich., and his book have sparked a controversy that has dominated the evangelical social media sphere. The book’s name even hints at the controversy: “Love Wins: A Book About Heaven, Hell, and the Fate of Every Person Who Ever Lived.”

Participating in the discussion will be Justin Taylor, a vice president at Crossway publishing, as well as Southern Seminary’s R. Albert Mohler Jr., Russell Moore and Denny Burk. Taylor’s blog criticizing the book was the first major critique.

The 90-minute event will be streamed live at SBTS.edu beginning at 2:30 Eastern.

Bell is part of what is often called the emerging church movement.

“Time is running out on the Emerging folks,” Mohler wrote on his blog. “They can play the game of suggestion for only so long. Eventually, the hard questions will be answered. Tragically, when the answers do come, as with the case of Brian McLaren, they appear as nothing more than a mildly updated form of Protestant liberalism.”
