SBC church offers help to boy after family dies in train collision


DECATUR, GA. (BP)–A suburban Atlanta church has set up a trust fund for a five-year-old boy whose family was killed in a Jan. 8 train collision.

Will Duffeck, 5, was the lone survivor in a crash that killed his father, Gary Steven Duffeck, 44; his mother, Ruth Ann Duffeck, 32; and his sister, Zodia, 3.

Church officials at Briarlake Baptist Church in Decatur, Ga., said the family was active in Sunday School activities at the church and all four held memberships in the church’s Sunday School.

Authorities said the family was killed when their car was struck by a southbound CSX train at an ungated railroad crossing in Calhoun, Ga. Will remained in stable condition at a Gordon County, Ga. hospital.

Investigators said the family had been visiting relatives in the area at the time of the accident.

The church spokesperson said a trust fund has been organized to raise money for the little boy. “They were a very active family,” the church spokesperson said. “And the children sang in our choirs.”

The church spokesperson said a trust fund for Will has been organized at Briarlake Baptist Church, Will Duffeck Trust Fund, 3715 Lavista Road, Decatur, Ga. 30033.

An investigation by law enforcement and CSX railroad officials was expected to continue.
