IMB celebrates Asian American Pacific Islander Month

By Ann Lovell/IMB

RICHMOND, Va. (BP) – May is Asian American Pacific Islander month in the U.S., and the IMB is celebrating the rich contributions of Asians, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to the Revelation 7:9 vision through a series of videos and children’s materials on its website.

“We want to take this opportunity to highlight the contributions of many Asian Americans who are serving with us around the world,” said IMB President Paul Chitwood in an announcement to employees in early May.

The emphasis is designed to motivate Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to consider missions with IMB and to mobilize Asian fellowships within the Southern Baptist Convention to partner with IMB in reaching the nations with the Good News of Jesus.

A new landing page [2] on the imb.org website focuses on Asian Church missions and includes videos celebrating Asian, Asian American and Pacific Islanders who have answered God’s call to the nations. The videos also celebrate the diversity of Asian fellowships within the Southern Baptist Convention. As part of IMB’s Heroes of the Faith series, the page features children’s materials, including short stories and a word search, to help kids connect with Asian contributions.

By Katie Coleman/SWBTS

[7]FORT WORTH, Texas (BP) – Bert B. Dominy, theology professor at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary from 1968-2001, died May 20. He was 83.

“Dr. Dominy was a favorite professor of many students at Southwestern Seminary during his decades of service here, well regarded for his classroom instruction and the way he related to those ‘frail children of dust’ he taught,” said SWBTS President Adam W. Greenway. “His impact continues to this day in the lives of the countless students he taught and those to whom they minister. I urge all Southwesterners to join me in prayer for his wife, Anna Jo, and his family.”

He then became a three-time graduate of Southwestern Seminary, earning his Bachelor of Divinity in 1963, Doctor of Theology in 1969, and Master of Divinity in 1973. Greer to be nominated as SBC Pastors’ Conference treasurer

By Lonnie Wilkey/Baptist and Reflector

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (BP) – Tennessee Baptist pastor Sam Greer will be nominated as treasurer of the 2022 Southern Baptist Pastors’ Conference.

[9]Greer, pastor of Red Bank Baptist Church in Chattanooga, will be nominated by Chuck Herring, pastor of First Baptist Church of Collierville, Tenn. Greer surrendered to the ministry in 2003 when Herring was pastor of First Baptist Church of Richland, Miss.

The nomination will take place Monday, June 14, as part of the pastors’ track during the Send Conference in Nashville that precedes the 2021 SBC Annual Meeting at the Music City Center.

His long association with Greer is one of the primary reasons Herring is nominating him. Greer was called into the ministry several years after graduating from Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss., and began a career as a financial planner.

“I saw how hard he worked to prepare by returning to school for eight years,” Herring said. “I have seen him become a faithful expositor of the Word of God in the churches he has served. To see how God has used him at Red Bank Baptist and The Point at Signal Mountain (a campus of Red Bank) is a testimony to the impact he has had for the kingdom.”
