SBC DIGEST: Lifeway commissions camp staff, B&H Español named Publisher of the Year

Lifeway celebrates commissioning of camp employees for new season of ministry

By Aaron Wilson

NASHVILLE (BP) – Lifeway Christian Resources employees from across the organization gathered in person and online May 12 to pray for the upcoming camp season and to send staff members working at camp off to their summer posts in style.

Hundreds of local employees assembled at Forest Hills Baptist Church in Nashville, Tenn., while other employees – many scattered across the country and world – joined by Zoom to participate in the commissioning of Student Life, Student Life Kids, Fuge and CentriKid employees for a new season of ministry.

“The International Mission Board periodically holds commissioning services for their missionaries who are being sent out into the world,” said Ben Mandrell, Lifeway president and CEO. “This Team Huddle is designed to be our version of that. This is the final team meeting our camps teams will be able to engage in this year in person before they leave to serve, and we want to draw attention to what they’re doing and pray for them.”

The event began with Carrie Dodson, event coordinator, asking employees to stand or raise their hand online if they had participated in different camp experiences growing up or through serving in their local churches. Dozens of employees acknowledged they had experienced a significant encounter with God at a Christian summer camp. Several indicated it was at camp where they gave their life to Christ or first dedicated their life to vocational ministry.

“I know countless people who made life-changing choices in a camp setting,” Mandrell said. “This summer, tens of thousands of kids and students will gather at one of our camps. This is some of the most abundant seed-sowing we get to do. It’s one of the experiences we design to fuel ministry.”
