Barry McCarty to join Truett McConnell University faculty
By Jenny Gregory

CLEVELAND, Ga. (BP) — Barry McCarty, longtime parliamentarian for the Southern Baptist Convention’s annual meetings, will join the faculty of Truett McConnell University as professor of rhetoric and communication. McCarty also will develop and serve as dean of the university’s new School of Communications.

McCarty has acquired more than 600 platform hours at SBC annual meetings since he began his tenure as parliamentarian in 1986 under the presidency of Charles Stanley. McCarty has served under 17 SBC presidents.

“I want the people at TMU to understand that Southern Baptists have a deep belief in Dr. Barry McCarty,” said Ronnie Floyd, current president and CEO of the SBC Executive Committee and SBC president from 2014-2016. “They [Southern Baptists] have watched him provide counsel and direction to the convention in some very challenging years. His professionalism and his winsome personality results in bringing great admiration from Southern Baptists.”

McCarty, a native of Atlanta, received a bachelor of science in Biblical studies from Mid-Atlantic Christian University, a master’s in speech communication from Abilene Christian University and a Ph.D. in rhetoric and argumentation, with a minor in philosophy, from the University of Pittsburgh.

He served 22 years as a pastor in Georgia, Ohio and Texas and has served on the faculty or administration of Cincinnati Christian University, the University of Pittsburgh, Mid-Atlantic University, Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary, and for the past five years, The Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.

Rhetoric — the art of persuasive speaking and writing — has been the McCarty’s primary field of study.

“Even in the age of Google, Wikipedia, and smartphone spellcheck, the mastery of rhetoric, grammar, and logic are still essential for becoming a well-educated person,” McCarty said. “Whatever else a university may do to prepare students for life and a career, it must first help them to become literate adults who can think critically and use language precisely and persuasively.”

Truett McConnell President Emir Caner said: “How thrilled I am that Dr. McCarty is joining the faculty of Truett McConnell University. His wealth of experience will be an invaluable asset to our University. To top it off, he is a prince of preachers with an innate love for students.”

Patrick Schreiner to join Midwestern Seminary faculty
By T. Patrick Hudson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (BP) — Midwestern Seminary President Jason Allen announced Monday (May 11) the hiring of Patrick Schreiner, who will join the school’s faculty as associate professor of New Testament and biblical theology effective Aug. 1.

Schreiner comes to Midwestern Seminary after serving as associate professor of New Testament language and literature at the Portland, Ore., campus of Western Seminary and as elder of Christ Church Sellwood, also in Portland, since 2014.

“Like most every other institution and ministry in America, Midwestern Seminary remains in a season of focused financial stewardship due to COVID-19,” Allen said. “Nonetheless, we are delighted to add Dr. Patrick Schreiner to our faculty, as he’ll meet both current and future seminary needs. Dr. Schreiner is one of evangelicalism’s most promising New Testament scholars.”

Allen said Schreiner will fit in well with a new generation of rising scholars at Midwestern Seminary, and that adding him to the recent faculty hires of Andreas Köstenberger, Jason DeRouchie and others, “strengthens the school’s already strong biblical studies faculty and is a significant institutional step forward.”

“His future is promising and through recent and forthcoming publications, Dr. Schreiner has already established himself as a serious and well-respected New Testament scholar,” Allen continued. “More importantly, he’s a churchman, and feels called to devote his energies to training a generation of pastors, ministers, and missionaries in Kansas City.”

Allen said conversations with Schreiner took place well before COVID-19 emerged, adding he is grateful that “even through all the disruption this pandemic has brought that we can add such an accomplished scholar to our faculty. We remain grateful to the Lord for His ongoing provision.”

“MBTS is a thriving place to be because they have great leadership, a clear vision, and a faculty that holds firm to confessional integrity, personal piety, and local church involvement,” Shreiner said.

Schreiner earned both M.Div. and Ph.D. degrees at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and earned a bachelor’s in news/editorial journalism from Western Kentucky University. In ministry, he has served as an intern at Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., and as associate pastor at Burton Memorial Baptist Church in Bowling Green, Ky.

Books he has authored include “Matthew, Disciple and Scribe: The First Gospel and Its Portrait of Jesus” and “The Kingdom of God and the Glory of the Cross: Short Studies in Biblical Theology.” He is currently writing a book on Christ’s ascension.

“While I am thrilled to have the Schreiner family joining us at Midwestern, I am equally thrilled for our students in all of our programs,” Midwestern Seminary Provost Jason Duesing said. “Patrick Schreiner is a writing scholar and a winsome instructor who complements well the strengths of the Midwestern Seminary faculty. It will be a joy to count him as a colleague for the church.”
