SBC disaster volunteers on Letterman tonight

NEW YORK CITY (BP)–Several Southern Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers from Tennessee took a break to attend the Late Show with David Letterman Sept. 20 hoping they would have an opportunity to share their story with Letterman and his nationwide audience. They were successful and are slated to be on the program Friday night, Sept. 21.

The Tennessee Baptist Convention responded immediately to the Sept. 21 disaster in New York by sending both a mobile disaster relief kitchen and a shower unit to the city. They began serving meals during the weekend.

Eleven of the volunteers were able to attend the taping of the popular late night program and two were chosen to participate in a stunt with Letterman. When the host asked where they were from and what they were doing in New York, the Tennessee Baptists were able to share the story of the Southern Baptists’ relief efforts. The audience responded with a standing ovation.

The volunteers told their story this morning to North American Mission Board President Robert E. Reccord who is reviewing Southern Baptist response in New York.

“Southern Baptists across our country and around the world can be so very proud of how they are being represented here and in Washington D.C. These volunteers are doing a fantastic job,” Reccord said. “I would continue to encourage all Southern Baptists to lift them in prayer. They are working so hard and are so tired much of the time.”
