SBTS: Mohler appointed to Schaeffer chair

[1]

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP)–R. Albert Mohler Jr., president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, has been appointed to the Francis Schaeffer Chair of Cultural Apologetics at the World Journalism Institute at The King’s College in New York City.

As the holder of the Francis Schaeffer chair, Mohler will give a series of lectures to the World Journalism Institute students at its multi-week course on convergence journalism in May in New York. This will be the second series of lectures by Mohler to WJI students. Prior to being elected president of Southern Seminary in 1993, Mohler served as editor for The Christian Index, newsjournal of the Georgia Baptist Convention.

Schaeffer, who died in 1984, helped ignite an apologetics movement and spur biblical philosophical thinking among evangelicals in the 20th century, warning the church to guard against the increasing influence of secular humanism and the deterioration of discipleship.

The World Journalism Institute’s mission is to recruit, equip, place and encourage Christian journalists in the mainstream newsrooms of first America and then the world. To that end, WJI offers courses, conferences, internship funding and monographs on the intersection of Christianity and journalism. SOUTHERN TO HOST ADOPTION CONFERENCE — Russell Moore, David Platt and Jedd Medefind will be featured speakers at the “Adopting for Life” conference at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., Feb. 26-27.

“You may be wondering whether this will be a conference about the doctrine of adoption or ‘real’ adoption,” Moore, senior vice president for academic administration at Southern, said. “Well, one of the things that we’ll be discussing is the fact that you can’t talk about the one without talking about the other.”

Platt is pastor of The Church at Brook Hills in Birmingham, Ala., and Medefind is president of the Christian Alliance for Orphans, a ministry that unites churches and orphans.

“We’ve invited a number of great speakers to Adopting for Life who will seek to equip us to create a culture of adoption in our families and churches,” said Moore, who also serves as Southern’s dean of the school of theology.

“We’ll be answering questions such as, ‘What does adoption have to do with the Great Commission?’ ‘How can I pay for adoption?’ and ‘How can we start an adoption ministry in my church?’ — along with so many others … as we think together about how God might be leading us to be on mission with Christ for the sake of the orphans of the world,” Moore said.

The conference begins Friday afternoon with a general session, including worship led by Andrew Peterson, followed by dinner, another session and a Peterson concert. Saturday includes breakfast, a general session, two breakout sessions, lunch, a closing general session and a question-and-answer panel discussion. Exhibitors from related fields also will be on hand at the conference.

Registration before Feb. 15 is $140 per person or $225 per couple, with a slight discount for Southern students. The rates include meals during the conference; a list of lodging options with discounted rates is available at sbts.edu.
