Seminary journal amplifies SBC study of Thessalonians

[1]

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP)–The Thessalonian letters in the New Testament, the focus of Southern Baptists’ winter Bible study, is also the subject of the most recent Southern Baptist Journal of Theology, published by Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky.
Published early to coincide with SBC quarterly studies, the journal provides information on the background, theology and practical implications of the two letters, said Randall Tan, assistant editor of the journal.
“Our articles are written to target not just scholars, but they’re targeted toward pastors and laypeople,” Tan said.
The journal articles also offer insight into study methods which can be applied to both Pauline epistles and the entire New Testament.
“As readers we want to grasp what Paul communicates so that we do not impose our own ideas upon the letters,” wrote Thomas Schreiner, editor of the journal. “We want to have a fresh vision of what Paul says, and thereby hear the word of God for our day.”
The journal features the following articles: “Interpreting the Pauline Epistles,” by Schreiner, who also serves as professor of New Testament interpretation at Southern Seminary; “Hope in the Lord: Introduction to 1 and 2 Thessalonians,” by John B. Polhill, professor of New Testament interpretation at Southern Seminary; “The Literary Structure of 1 and 2 Thessalonians,” by David Alan Black, professor of New Testament and Greek at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C.; “Faith, Hope and Love: Paul’s Message to the Church at Thessalonica,” by Mark A. Seifrid, associate professor of New Testament interpretation at Southern Seminary; “The God-Driven Church,” a sermon by Steven J. Lawson, senior pastor of Dauphin Way Baptist Church in Mobile, Ala.; and “Spiritual Exercises to Make You Strong,” a sermon by Daniel L. Akin, vice president for academic administration and dean of Southern Seminary’s school of theology.
