Southeastern student dies in Kenyan auto accident

WAKE FOREST, N.C. (BP)–Southeastern Baptist Theological seminary student Joshua Chebon, 45, a native of Kenya, died Sunday, June 21, in an automobile accident near Nairobi as he was making efforts to renew his visa.

Chebon, a master of divinity student, is survived by his wife, Mary, and four children, Dorcus, 11, Peter, 8, Deborah, 6, and Phillip, 15 months.

Chebon, of Baringo, Kenya, was preparing in his studies at Southeastern to return to his home country to pastor a church.

As a student at Southeastern’s Wake Forest, N.C., campus, he was a member of Glen Royal Baptist Church in Wake Forest. Memorial Services will be held during the week of July 29 before his family returns to Kenya.

Dwayne Beddingfield, pastor of Glen Royal Baptist Church, said Chebon was “a great man of God. It was a miracle that Joshua was able to go to Africa. Only days before he was scheduled to leave he didn’t think he would have the money to go, but God miraculously provided. We don’t understand God’s way all the time. It is a terrible loss for his family.”
