Southern rockers Third Day wins Group of Year

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)–Southern rockers Third Day brought down the house as they picked up Dove Award honors as the 2002 Gospel Music Association Group of the Year. Third Day also won Group of the Year honors in 2001.

Lead vocalist Mac Powell led the boys from Atlanta to the stage of the Grand Ole Opry, thanking those who voted for the contemporary rockers.

“Raise your hands if you voted for us,” Powell told the audience. “We’re taking you to Shoney’s.”

Powell noted that the 2002 Dove Award was special in light of the group’s tenth anniversary.

“We wrote Come Together because going on the road and seeing so many people come together in the body of Christ despite denominational walls really made an impact on us,” he said.

“We all grew up in different denominational backgrounds and Third Day is a small example of what the church can do when you come together in the name of Jesus and set those differences aside,” he added.
