SPORTS: Auburn’s Malzahn goes to Ark. State

[1]

JONESBORO, Ark. (BP)–Auburn University offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn has been named the head football coach at Arkansas State University.

Malzahn, a Southern Baptist who previously was a member of Cross Church (formerly First Baptist Church in Springdale, Ark.), will take over for the Red Wolves after Hugh Freeze was named the head coach at Ole Miss. Freeze, also a Southern Baptist and member of Central Baptist Church in Jonesboro, led Arkansas State to a 10-2 record this year, his only season as the team’s head coach.

Malzahn has been with Auburn for the past three seasons, winning a national championship with the Tigers in January. He previously served as offensive coordinator at the University of Tulsa and the University of Arkansas.

From 1996-2000, Malzahn was head coach at Shiloh Christian School, operated by Cross Church in Springdale. He transformed Shiloh into one of the nation’s elite football schools, compiling a 63-8-1 record in five seasons, with two state championships and two state runner-up finishes.
