Status of Ga. editor awaits Jan. 25 trustee meeting

ATLANTA (BP)–A report is being circulated by a Baptist periodical that William Neal, editor of The Christian Index of the Baptist State Convention of Georgia, “is being forced to take early retirement.”

J. Robert White, executive director of the convention, issued a statement to Baptist Press in response to an inquiry concerning the report circulated by Baptists Today Jan. 20.

“I have held conversations with William Neal about his retirement as editor of The Christian Index,” White stated. “The details of his retirement have not been worked out. There is a scheduled Index trustee board meeting on Saturday [Jan. 25].”

Neal was unavailable for comment by Baptist Press’ deadline Jan. 20.

Neal, 55, has been editor of The Index since 1993 and previously was the paper’s associate editor and, earlier, a student ministry leader during a 28-year career with the Georgia convention.

Baptists Today, an independent publication, is based in Macon, Ga.
