EDITORS’ NOTE: Each day leading up to Super Bowl, sportwriter Art Stricklin will spotlight a related event in Houston featuring a spiritual dimension.

HOUSTON (BP)–Christian musicians, football players and sports fans will have a chance to raise the roof tonight with praises to God at the sixth annual Super Bowl Gospel Celebration at Houston’s Reliant Arena beginning at 8 p.m. Central.

The event was begun in 1999 to give families in the host city and those attending the big game a chance to attend a pre-game event with a Christian atmosphere featuring the top names in gospel music and athletes’ testimonies.

This year’s musical lineup includes Patti LaBelle, Donnie McClurkin, Mary-Mary and John P. Kee. Among the NFL stars who have spoken at past festivals are St. Louis Rams quarterback Kurt Warner, former Dallas Cowboys cornerback Deion Sanders and New York Jets running back Curtis Martin.

This year’s athletes co-chairmen are Dallas Cowboys quarterback Quincy Carter and former Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Cris Carter.

“This is truly a blessed event where we’re bringing the Gospel to the biggest game on earth,” said event founder and manager Melanie Few.
