GREENSBORO, N.C. (BP)–Kelly J. Burris, senior pastor of Kempsville Baptist Church in Virginia Beach, Va., will be nominated for first vice president of the Southern Baptist Convention by Kansas pastor Terry Fox, Fox said June 5.

Burris is a past president of the Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia and still serves on the executive committee of that convention. He currently serves on the board of trustees of Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary in Mill Valley, Calif., and formerly served on the board of trustees of the North American Mission Board. He has been pastor of Kempsville Baptist since 1988.

He is the third nominee for first vice president. Jimmy Jackson, pastor of Whitesburg Baptist Church in Huntsville, Ala., and Keith Fordham, an evangelist from Fayetteville, Ga., also are expected to be nominated.

Fox, senior pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church in Wichita, Kan., called Burris a “successful, proven, faithful pastor.”

“It’s a great time to have some new names, and Kelly has not been nominated for anything like this in the past,” Fox said. “Kelly is a proven Southern Baptist. He is a man of integrity and would make a great first vice president.”

Burris has a bachelor’s degree from Wingate College, a master’s degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and a doctorate from Trinity Theological Seminary.
