LOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP)–Southern Baptist Pastors’ Conference President Ed Litton garnered cheers and applause as he ended the two-day meeting with an engagement announcement.

Litton introduced “a wonderful, godly woman,” Kathy Ferguson, as his fiancé following the closing prayer June 21.

Litton, pastor of First Baptist Church North Mobile in Saraland, Ala., lost his wife Tammy in an automobile accident in August 2007.

Ferguson’s husband Rick, who was pastor of Riverside Baptist Church in Denver, was killed in an automobile accident in July 2002.

Litton has three teenage children and Ferguson has three adult children.

“Many of you have prayed for the Ferguson family just as you prayed for the Litton family,” Litton said. “God brought us into each other’s lives.

“This August we are going to make vows to God and one another to be husband and wife, and I just wanted to tell somebody.”
