
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (BP)–Two states’ children’s homes, a local church, a state foundation, a state convention and a national agency were top winners in the Baptist Communicators Association’s 1999 Wilmer C. Fields Awards.
The awards were announced at the group’s annual workshop April 22-24 in Jacksonville, Fla.
Addressing the group were Calvin Miller, professor of preaching and ministries studies, Beeson Divinity School, Samford University, Birmingham, Ala.; Hal Wingo, retired editor of Life and People magazines, Richmond, Va.; Joseph Nolan, former public relations executive and communications professor, Jacksonville, Fla.; and Mark Pinsky, senior religion reporter at the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel and former religion writer for the Los Angeles Times.
Officers elected to serve the organization for the next year were: Mark Wingfield, Baptist Standard, president; Eddy Oliver, Georgia Baptist Convention, program chair; Scott Vaughan, South Carolina Baptist Convention, program chair-elect; Stephanie Delgado, LifeWay Christian Conference Center at Glorieta, awards chair; Diane Reasoner, Georgia Baptist Convention, professional development coordinator; Kim Burke, Tennessee Baptist Children’s Homes, membership vice president; Sean Taylor, North American Mission Board, newsletter editor; Tim Norton, Christian Index, treasurer; and Roy Jennings, retired, Baptist Memorial Health Care System, historian.

Grand Prize Winners:
Arthur S. Davenport Award for exceptional achievement in public relations was awarded to LifeWay Communications Department at LifeWay Christian Resources for “Corporate Name Change.”
M.E. Dodd Award for exceptional achievement in electronic media went to Jim Edminson at the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home for “100 Years.”
M.E. Dodd Award for exceptional achievement in emerging technology was given to Kim Burke, Gerald Stow, and Bryant Millsaps at the Tennessee Baptist Children’s Home for “Tennessee Baptist Children’s Home website.”
Frank Burkhalter Award for exceptional achievement in news writing was awarded to Ken Camp and Dan Martin from the Baptist General Convention of Texas for “Healing Communities.”
Leonard Holloway Award for exceptional achievement in feature writing was given to Russell Rankin from Buckner Foundation for “Romania: The Power of Touch.”
Fon H. Scofield Award for exceptional achievement in publication photography also went to Russell Rankin from Buckner Foundation for “Romania: The Power of Touch.”
Albert McClellan Award for exceptional achievement in print media and design was awarded to Larry Thompson, Susan Word, and Wade Mealer from Bellevue Baptist Church, Memphis, Tenn., for “Light & Truth.”
