
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP)–Projects in Moldova were among the beneficiaries of Woman’s Missionary Union endowment funds awarded during its Jan. 15–18 board meeting at Shocco Springs Baptist Conference Center in Talladega, Ala.
WMU executive board grants totaled $89,000 from the Second Century Fund and an additional $49,657 in scholarships and other grants.
“It is our privilege to partner with WMU to provide support for missions work and leadership development, both here in the United States and around the world,” said David George, president of the WMU Foundation. “With so many worthy applicants, it is such a blessing to see how God uses these financial resources and allows us to play a part in furthering His mission here on earth.”
Created by WMU during its centennial year in 1988, the Second Century Fund is a permanent endowment managed by the WMU Foundation. The fund’s purpose is to provide financial support for leadership development of women participating in missions work. Since 1988, WMU has awarded more than $1.3 million in grants through this fund.
With WMU beginning a three-year partnership in Moldova, funds will assist in missions educational and leadership development for women and girls in the European country. WMU’s endowment committee recommended grants be awarded for this initiative in 2006 and 2007 as well. Ministries in Jordan also will be assisted.
WMU organizations receiving grants, by state or province and dollar amount, are: Alaska, $4,500; California, $2,000; Colorado, $1,200; Dakotas, $4,000; Hawaii, $2,500; District of Columbia, $4,000; Indiana, $2,000; Iowa, $1,000; Kansas-Nebraska, $5,400; Michigan, $3,000; Minnesota-Wisconsin, $3,000; Nevada, $4,500; New England, $4,000; New Mexico, $2,900; New York, $4,000; Northwest, $4,000; Ohio, $3,500; Pennsylvania/South Jersey, $2,500; Puerto Rico/Virgin Islands, $6,000; Utah-Idaho, $3,000; West Virginia, $5,000; and Wyoming, $3,000.
In addition to grants from the Second Century Fund, the executive board awarded 26 scholarships, with 15 designated to children of missionaries.
