WMU awards $65,000 in grants for women’s missions work

TALLADEGA, Ala. (BP)–Southern Baptist Woman’s
Missionary Union’s executive board awarded $65,000 in Second
Century Fund grants during its annual meeting Jan. 10-14 at
Shocco Springs Baptist Assembly, Talladega, Ala.
The grants, assigned to both home and international
fields, will fund a variety of projects designed to educate
and involve women in missions.
The Second Century Fund is a permanent endowment
created by WMU during its centennial year in 1988 as a gift
to future generations of women in missions. All
contributions are invested permanently, along with 10
percent of each year’s earnings on the principal, which
stands at over $1.4 million. The remaining interest is given
each year in grants. Since 1988, WMU has awarded $631,523 in
grants.
Of the 24 grants awarded this year, three went to
international projects and 21 were given to domestic
efforts.
The largest grant of the 24 goes to the Arab Baptist
Theological Seminary in Maten, Lebanon. The $10,000 grant
will provide scholarships for women to attend the seminary.
Grants also were awarded to support the spring National
Women’s Congress in Santiago, Chile, and to the Philippines
Woman’s Missionary Union for leadership training and
development in writing for national WMU magazines.
Nineteen of the domestic grants will provide training
and/or materials for WMU organizations within the state or
regional Baptist conventions of Alaska, California,
Colorado, Hawaii, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota-Wisconsin,
Nevada, New England, New Mexico, New York, Northwest, Ohio,
Pennsylvania-South Jersey, Utah-Idaho, West Virginia and
Wyoming. Several of the grants will benefit leadership from
a variety of language/ethnic congregations.
Grants also were awarded to the Virginia Baptist
Nursing Fellowship for its Virginia Baptist Parish Nurse
Education Program and to the South Carolina WMU to help fund
the MK Re-entry Retreat for missionary kids who are entering
college in the United States for the first time. The annual
event is sponsored by state WMU organizations, the national
WMU and the International Mission Board.
