[1]KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (BP)–An individual has filed a class-action lawsuit against Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake, MTV, CBS and Viacom seeking compensation for herself and millions of viewers who were “injured” by the lewd behavior of the halftime show during Super Bowl XXXVIII.
Terri Carlin, a bank worker, filed the suit in federal court in Knoxville, Tenn., Feb. 3. In it she claims, “All of the defendants knew that the Super Bowl, the preeminent sports event in the United States, would be watched by millions of families and children. Nevertheless, defendants included in the halftime show sexually explicit acts solely designed to garner publicity and, ultimately, to increase profits for themselves.”
The plaintiff is asking for punitive damages not to exceed the combined gross revenues of all defendants over the last three years.
Carlin filed the suit on behalf of all Americans who watched the Super Bowl and “were caused to suffer outrage, anger, embarrassment, and serious injury,” according to the court document.
“Families have an expectation that they can trust companies and individuals such as the defendants not to expose families to sexually explicit conduct during broadcasts of prime time events such as the Super Bowl,” the suit states.
Ritchie, Fels & Dillard, the Knoxville law firm representing Carlin, provided the following statement to Baptist Press:
[2]“In keeping with the letter and the spirit of the rules of court, neither Miss Carlin nor this office will be doing any interviews at this time. Further, the issue here is accountability, not more publicity.”
