INDIANAPOLIS (BP)–Woody Cumbie, pastor of Northside Baptist Church, Indianapolis, has announced he will nominate John Yeats to another term as SBC recording secretary.
Yeats is the editor of the Oklahoma Baptist Messenger and was a member of Cumbie’s Indiana church. Yeats’ son, John-Mark, is a member of Cumbie’s church staff.
“John Yeats has a pastor’s heart and an editor’s eye for detail,” Cumbie said. “He was a pastor for over two decades before he began serving as editor. When he was in Indiana … he was an encourager to me, his pastor, and a friend of the small church pastor.
“Because John Yeats has served in a missions state, he knows that we must make a bold and strategic advance into uncharted areas for Southern Baptists,” Cumbie said. “Yet his service in mainline states gives him an anchor in the rich heritage of our convention.”
Yeats is a native Oklahoman. He is a graduate of Dallas Baptist University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas. He served churches in Kansas, Montana, Oklahoma and Texas.
Yeats has served as SBC recording secretary since 1998.
He had his wife, Sharon, have three sons, John-Mark, Joel and Jordan.
Yeats will be nominated at the SBC’s June 13-14 annual meeting at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla.
