2005: The Year of the Bible

[1]

Because messengers to the Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting in Indianapolis June 15-16 voted overwhelmingly to declare 2005 as "The Year of the Bible," Broadman & Holman will distribute a special edition of their new translation of the Bible specifically geared toward reading the complete Scriptures in one calendar year.

Resolution No. 7 on the Holman Christian Standard Bible stated in part, "Southern Baptists have been historically and continually committed to the authority, sufficiency, and inerrancy of the Bible, and have upheld God's Word as 'a lamp for my feet and a light on my path' (Psalm 119:105 HCSB) and the source of revealed truth (John 17:17)."

Messengers therefore resolved in part to designate 2005 as "The Year of the Bible" and to urge every Southern Baptist to read through the Bible during that year.

To support the resolution, Broadman & Holman Publishers, the trade book division of LifeWay Christian Resources, will release a special edition of its new Holman CSB in November to facilitate each person's efforts to read through the Bible in 365 days.

"I move that we…reaffirm our absolute dependence upon the Holy Bible as the inspired, infallible, and inerrant Word of God … calling on members of each Southern Baptist church to read through the entire Bible systematically in one calendar year, commencing January 1, 2005, and concluding December 31, 2005," stated a motion from Ed Ethridge, director of missions for the North Texas Baptist Association.

A team of 100 scholars from around the world representing more than twenty Protestant denominations worked together translating from the original biblical languages of Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic to arrive at the Holman CSB, which aims to be the most accurate and readable modern English translation available today.

Originating in 1984, the complete Holman CSB was finally released to the public in April 2004. It is the first all-new Bible translation from a major publisher in more than twenty-five years.

The forthcoming special Holman CSB Year of the Bible edition will be called Every Day with Jesus. Available in paperback and hardcover, it will organize the full Bible text into 365 daily readings, each containing excerpts from the Old Testament and New Testament, and daily devotionals taken from the writings of acclaimed British author Selwyn Hughes. Hughes is the founder of Crusade for World Revival, an international publishing and training ministry designed to apply God's Word to everyday life and relationships.

"We are humbled to have the Holman CSB involved in the proposed Year of the Bible," John Thompson, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Broadman & Holman, said. "Every Day with Jesus will be a Bible edition that every Christian believer can embrace, and we're excited to join in this effort originated by the SBC."
