2005: The Year of the Bible
Through Bible in One Year

Because messengers to the Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting in Indianapolis June 15-16 voted overwhelmingly to declare 2005 as "The Year of the Bible," Broadman & Holman have published a special edition of their new translation of the Bible specifically geared toward reading the complete Scriptures in one calendar year.

Resolution No. 7 on the Holman Christian Standard Bible stated in part, "Southern Baptists have been historically and continually committed to the authority, sufficiency, and inerrancy of the Bible, and have upheld God's Word as 'a lamp for my feet and a light on my path' (Psalm 119:105 HCSB) and the source of revealed truth (John 17:17)."

Messengers therefore resolved in part to designate 2005 as "The Year of the Bible" and to urge every Southern Baptist to read through the Bible during that year.

To support the resolution, Broadman & Holman Publishers, the trade book division of LifeWay Christian Resources, have released a special edition of its new Holman CSB, called Every Day with Jesus, to facilitate each person's efforts to read through the Bible in 365 days.

One Million Baptism Goal Sparks Evangelists

Southern Baptist evangelists "joyfully and wholeheartedly lend our support to our Convention President, Bobby Welch, in his effort to inspire our churches to witness, win, and baptize 1 million people to Christ," officers of the Conference of Southern Baptist Evangelists declared in a recent resolution.

The evangelists will bolster Welch's initiative for 1 million baptisms, which officially kicks off at the SBC annual meeting June 21-22 in Nashville, by devoting their annual Sunday worship service to the theme of "Evangelism Born in the Heart of God." The June 19 service will be held at the historic Ryman Auditorium in downtown Nashville.

In their resolution, officers of the evangelists' national organization noted that "25 to 50 percent of all baptisms come through local church revival," which underscores "the value and effectiveness of such revivals as a primary means of reaching the lost both in the church and outside the church."

Christians are "living in tumultuous times that demand more than temporary or superficial answers," the evangelists stated, reaffirming a "commitment as evangelists of the Southern Baptist Convention to be faithful to our calling" and "to pray for God to do a mighty reviving work in our Convention that will result in the salvation of countless souls."
