BPSports columnist laments loss of sandlot baseball

[1]

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)–American neighborhoods used to be dotted with all kinds of makeshift baseball diamonds. Children spent hour upon hour playing sandlot baseball — what proved to be the training grounds for countless future major leaguers.

But sandlot baseball is all but gone today, BPSports columnist Tim Ellsworth writes; too many kids have too many other things to occupy their time, and parents are largely responsible for the disappearance of such unstructured, for-the-love-of-the-game activities.

Our national pastime and the lives of children, Ellsworth writes, are worse off because of it.
