College gives scholarships to churches involved in Centri-KID

GEORGETOWN, Ky. (BP)–Churches that send their kids to Centri-KID camp at Georgetown College can get more than spiritual benefits for their kids from a week of camp. They can position their students for a scholarship.

Georgetown College in Georgetown, Ky., has announced that $2,000 scholarships will be available to college-age students from churches that send campers to Centri-KID at Georgetown. Centri-KID is sponsored by LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Kids from the 53 churches that sent youngsters to Centri-KID at Georgetown last summer, and that pre-registered by Sept. 15 for this summer, are eligible for one Life-Changing Scholarship at Georgetown College. The Life-Changing Scholarships are $2,000 per year, renewable annually, based upon successful academic progress in the student’s chosen degree program and a display of good campus citizenry.

“We are humbled and blessed to have the Centri-KID camps as an integral part of our summer offerings, and the new Life-Changing Scholarship Program is a tangible way we may institutionally show our mutual commitment to life-changing experiences,” said Georgetown President William H. Crouch Jr.

“It’s kind of an institutional commitment to the camp,” said Pete LaRue, a music professor who established Centri-KID at Georgetown in 2001. “Our president decided one of the categories he wanted to reward, encourage and support with scholarship money was people from churches that sent their kids to Centri-KID.”

Any graduating senior from the class of 2005, who is a member in good-standing of a church that pre-registered for a 2005 cycle of Centri-KID Georgetown, and is selected by the church leadership as their recipient, is eligible.

The college, which hosted about 1,670 third- through sixth-graders in four weeks of Centri-KID camp this summer, is near Lexington, Ky.

Georgetown College is one of 45 sites across the nation that host Centri-KID camps. Centri-KID provides quality worship with age-appropriate activities in a stimulating environment designed to connect children of the 21st Century with Jesus Christ.

Small group Bible studies follow the morning celebration each day of Centri-KID camp. The Bible studies focus on the theme of the day and life application of God’s Word. From there, campers choose from a variety of tracks to develop their talents and interests.

Evening worship services are designed to help Centri-KID participants reflect on the biblical truths and life applications they learned during the day in the morning celebration, Bible studies, personal interest tracks and afternoon recreation.

Among the Centri-KID tracks are archery, babysitting, backpacking, clowning, creative painting, fishing, jewelry making, messy games, music, outdoor adventure, praise team, team sports and water sports.

“Centri-KID provides for the young person an opportunity to be immersed for a week in a climate and a culture of values, compassion and Christian caring that they’ll hopefully take home and that truly will change their lives,” LaRue said. “To me, if we can change a 10-year-old’s life, our world becomes a better place on down the road. It’s as simple as that.”
