[1]LOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP) – Southern Baptist Theological Seminary President Albert Mohler released a statement [2] late Wednesday (April 19) thanking supporters for their prayers and encouragement during his recent health scare.
Mohler was hospitalized [3] overnight Friday (April 14) with bilateral pulmonary emboli (blood clots in both lungs).
In his statement, Mohler said the one in his right lung was preventing him from breathing. At the hospital doctors discovered what he called a “major source clot” in one of his legs. They also performed tests revealing that Mohler carries a genetic factor that makes him likely to experience dangerous clots and emboli. He endured a similar scare [4] in late 2006 and early 2007.
“That is helpful knowledge,” he wrote in Wednesday’s statement. “I am thankful that there are treatments and medicines that can prevent or mitigate such dangerous clots in the future. I can assure you that I am fully cooperating with medical advice.”
After being released from the hospital, Mohler was able to attend [5] part of the meeting of Southern’s trustee board earlier this week, where he was honored for his 30 years at the helm of the seminary.
In his statement, Mohler said he expects to resume recording his popular daily podcast “The Briefing” on Friday (April 21), adding: “Doctors are very encouraging about resuming a regular schedule within a few days.”
[6]Mohler called the experience “deeply humbling” and expressed “profound gratitude” for his colleagues at SBTS and for “many kind expressions of prayer and concern from students, faculty colleagues, and so many other brothers and sisters in Christ.”
He also thanked his wife Mary, whose devotion he called “legendary,” his family, including “three pajama-clad grandchildren” who video called him, and the medical staff and others at Baptist Health Louisville.
