NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--SBC President Bobby Welch’s heightened vision for this year’s Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting stretches from an anticipated record number involved in the Crossover evangelistic outreach to baptism services during the convention sessions to a special segment honoring the life and work of Billy Graham.
      Welch’s plans have kept convention organizers busier than ever before.
      The Florida pastor arrived in Nashville the end of February to begin an intensive two-month push toward the June meeting. He and his wife, Maudellen, temporarily relocated to the convention city in order to focus efforts strategically on the area.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP)--The Nov. 11 death of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat turned the world’s attention back to the possibility of peace in the Middle East. For years the concept has seemed an impossible quest. But now, the potential could be greater than ever.
      In fact, the question being asked in many circles is, “What happens now?”

Budget-cut deliberations underway in Ala. legislature

RUSSELLVILLE, Ala. (BP)--Jesus provided the primary example of humble servanthood when He washed the feet of His disciples prior to the Passover Feast, which marked the nearing of His crucifixion.
     Members of an Alabama church experienced a taste of what that might have been like when they traveled to Moldova late last year.
     A team of seven from First Baptist Church, Russellville, including pastor Gene Balding, helped fit more than 3,000 orphans from 24 children's homes with winter boots.
