Courageous has another solid weekend

ALBANY, Ga. (BP) — The church-made movie “Courageous” dropped to No. 11 in its fourth weekend but maintained a strong per-theater average, finishing seventh.

Made by Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Ga., Courageous now has grossed $24.9 million, which is more than the church’s last movie, “Fireproof,” grossed in four weekends ($20.6 million). The next few weekends will determine if Courageous can pass Fireproof’s total gross of $33.4 million.

Courageous — made for $1 million — barely finished outside the Top 10 in its fourth weekend, grossing $2,494,020 to the $2,835,208 made by No. 10 “50/50.” Courageous averaged $2,087 in its 1,195 theaters.

Perhaps most impressive, Courageous’ 25 percent drop in weekend gross from its previous weekend was the lowest of holdovers. “Moneyball” dropped 27 percent, with other films losing between 32 and 55 percent in weekend-to-weekend gross.

On Monday Courageous remained the No. 1 fan-rated movie at Fandango.com, a leading movie ticketing website.

The movie follows the story of five men — four of them police officers — as they seek to become better fathers.
