Third Day’s Mac Powell named Male vocalist of year

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)–Third Day’s Mac Powell was named the Gospel Music Association’s Male Vocalist of the Year at the 2002 Dove Awards at the Grand Ole Opry House.

Urban rockers Mary Mary and Woody Rock presented Powell with his second Dove award of the night. It marked the second year that Powell was nominated for the award.

Powell, who also won honors with Third Day as the 2002 Group of the Year, thanked his “momma for getting me up every morning and getting me to church, my daddy for teaching me all those Lynyrd Skynrd songs.”

Powell also called his fellow band members in Third Day “his best friends in the world.”

Most of all, Powell said, he thanked Jesus Christ for dying on the cross and saving him.

Powell was up against Steven Curtis Chapman, David Phelps, Mark Schultz, and Michael W. Smith.
