Baseball builds bridges with Japanese Peruvians

LIMA, Peru (BP) -- Peru's Nikkei , Japanese immigrants and their descendants, live and work among Peruvians, but their loyalties to Japanese identity and community can wind as tightly as red threads stitched around a baseball. Although their circumstances dictate reliance on foreigners welcoming them as immigrants, their own Japanese culture compels a slow acceptance of outsiders, said International Mission Board missionary Tim Mitchell.

Former major leaguers share Christ in Peru

LIMA, Peru (BP) -- A rope isn't typical baseball gear, but Florida Baptist volunteer Josh Howard, who was headed for a baseball clinic in Lima, Peru, had good reason for packing a very, very long one in his suitcase. He spoke about eternity -- using a rope for a visual illustration that he learned listening to the teaching of evangelical pastor Francis Chan -- to a group of kids living in the moment to become better baseball players. And he was there with seven other former and current high school, college and professional baseball players and coaches -- all from Southern Baptist churches in Florida and Tennessee.
