JACKSON, Tenn. (BP)--As we enter this new century there are inescapable choices to be made and these choices have great implication for all aspects of life, particularly for higher education. Those who teach and study in Christ-centered institutions should take to heart the words of the Apostle Paul: "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds" (Romans 12:2).

JACKSON, Tenn. (BP)--While a student at the University of Alabama in the early '70s, my spiritual life was strengthened and given direction by the ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ. Having grown up in Southern Baptist life, I knew nothing of para-church groups at the time. A friend invited me to "College Life" (as it was called) on Sunday night. It was the most refreshing spiritual experience I had ever encountered. Here was a serious and bold Christianity.

JACKSON, Tenn. (BP)--You may have seen the episode in the Andy Griffith reruns where Barney is showing the Mayberry kids -- Opie and his friends -- around the sheriff's office. On the bulletin board are the "Most Wanted" pictures. One of the boys, intrigued by the pictures, asked Barney if these were real photographs of the wanted people. Yes! and they are vicious criminals, Barney proclaims. The boy responds, "Well, why didn't they just keep them when they took these pictures?" Why? is indeed an often-asked question.

(BP)--Last October, nearly 2,000 friends, trustees, faculty, staff and students of Union University had the unique opportunity to welcome former Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev to Jackson, Tenn. Mr. Gorbachev spoke for almost one hour on the topic "From Totalitarianism to Democracy." The former president was warm, personable and engaging for everyone who met him.
