CULTURE DIGEST: UCLA study says major media outlets are liberal; Christian colleges enjoy growth spurt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--A first-of-its-kind look at media bias, which included comparing news stories to congressional speeches, revealed that coverage by public television and radio is conservative compared to the rest of the mainstream media but that almost all major media outlets are liberal.

‘We are winning the war in Iraq,’ Bush says, urging patience & optimism from Americans

WASHINGTON (BP)--More than 10 million Iraqis voted in their first constitutional election on a “landmark day in the history of liberty,” President George W. Bush told the nation during his first address from the Oval Office since he announced the decision to send troops to Iraq, “yet our work is not done” and all Americans have a role to play in the effort.
      “Some look at the challenges in Iraq and conclude that the war is lost and not worth another dime or another day. I don't believe that,” Bush said during a prime-time speech Dec. 18. “Our military commanders do not believe that. Our troops in the field, who bear the burden and make the sacrifice, do not believe that America has lost. And not even the terrorists believe it. We know from their own communications that they feel a tightening noose and fear the rise of a democratic Iraq.”

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--Former President Jimmy Carter has agreed to correct future editions of his recently released book, “Our Endangered Values,” after James A. Smith Sr., executive editor of the Florida Baptist Witness newspaper, challenged his allegation about an Oval Office exchange with Adrian Rogers.

President Bush compares Iraq struggle
with America’s own quest for democracy

PHILADELPHIA (BP)--A few blocks from Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed and the U.S. Constitution was debated, President Bush called upon Americans to “keep this history in mind as we look at the progress of freedom and democracy in Iraq.”
      “No nation in history has made the transition to a free society without facing challenges, setbacks and false starts,” the president said in a Dec. 12 address to the Philadelphia World Affairs Council, noting that the success of America’s democratic experiment did not seem obvious at the time when it was conceived.
