SBDR work continues amid Canada’s ‘Beast’ wildfire

FORT MCMURRAY, Alberta, Canada (BP) -- The reign of the "Beast," a Canada wildfire that caused the immediate evacuation of 80,000 people in Fort McMurray, may almost be over. Government officials are working alongside non-governmental organization (NGO) council leaders, including Canadian National Baptist and Southern Baptist Disaster Relief as well as The Salvation Army, Samaritan's Purse and Billy Graham organization leaders and volunteers to speed the safe return of Fort McMurray residents. For the wildfire refugees escaping to the nearby city of Edmonton, the news of future re-entry brings relief.

National award recognizes Southern Baptist Disaster Relief

MINNEAPOLIS (BP) -- When devastating floods hit the Houston area in April, Southern Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers did what they normally do in the face of crisis. They responded. Those efforts were recognized May 20 when several disaster relief teams were acknowledged during this year's National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (National VOAD or VOAD) conference in Minneapolis. The organization presented SBDR with its National Member of the Year award.
