So That All May Know Him

Gordon Fort, vice president for overseas operations of the International Mission Board, presented to WMU the following original handwritten letter on June 10, 2007. It was penned by Lottie Moon on January 9, 1889, during a very cold winter in P'ingtu, China: My dear Miss Armstrong, I write to thank the Executive Committee for the […]

FIRST-PERSON: Season of self-denial

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP)--A letter from Lottie Moon, missionary to China, was published in the Foreign Mission Journal in 1887 urging Southern Baptist women to take seriously their role in reaching the world for Christ. In today’s busy church life, we sometimes forget her call to prayer, sacrificial giving and self-denial. As we begin our celebration of Christmas, let’s remember the words of Lottie herself:

FIRST-PERSON: Every Baptist a tither!

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP)--In January 1950, WMU’s Royal Service magazine carried an article entitled “Right Percentage” that highlighted the 25th anniversary of the Cooperative Program. This unique Southern Baptist program pools monetary resources from churches to support the goal of spreading the Gospel.

FIRST-PERSON: Answering God’s call

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP)--In the fourth chapter of Matthew, we read the words of Jesus to His first disciples: “Come, follow me.”

Answering God’s Call

In the fourth chapter of Matthew, we read the words of Jesus to His first disciples: "Come, follow me." It is an invitation that has been extended throughout the centuries since He first approached a small group of fishermen standing by the Sea of Galilee. Countless numbers of people have responded to Jesus since that […]

FIRST-PERSON: Informed, effective prayer

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP)--Do you believe that praying for missionaries makes a difference? That they covet your prayers for their protection and strength? That praying for the people missionaries are trying to reach helps prepare hearts to receive the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ?

Sacrificial Giving is Vital, But Informed Prayer is Essential

Do you believe that praying for missionaries makes a difference? That they covet your prayers for their protection and strength? That praying for the people missionaries are trying to reach helps prepare hearts to receive the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ? Time and time again, missionaries express their appreciation for the invaluable prayer support from […]

FIRST-PERSON: Missions’ enormity: long, deep, wide

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP)--To many who knew her, Ethlene Boone Cox was considered one of the most beautiful and most articulate leaders of Woman's Missionary Union. Born in 1890 in Tennessee, she quickly rose to prominence in Baptist life. At the age of 35, she was elected to the national WMU office of president. Her love for missions and her deep devotion to prayer made her a respected leader and endeared her to the women of the churches.

FIRST-PERSON: Personalized service key to developing lifelong customer

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP)--The television commercial displayed a beautifully decorated room with numerous amenities. The housekeeper exchanged a blue robe for the white one on the bathroom door. She removed a gorgeous bedspread and replaced it with one of leopard skin design. A framed gold record replaced the picture over the bed. The final touch -- a teddy bear placed gently on the bed as she turned to leave.

FIRST-PERSON: Good stewardship extends beyond finances, to all of one’s talent

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP)--"When I stand before God at the end of my life I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left and could say, 'I used everything you gave me.'"
